An Overview of the Department of English of Southern University Bangladesh:
Keeping in view the growing importance of English an international medium of communication and its application in banking, international trade and commerce, foreign affairs and international relations,
Southern University Bangladesh took initiative to start the Department of English immediately after its establishment to help create professionals in the field of language and literature. At the core of department, there is a commitment to help the students read critically, write effectively and appreciate the diverse values and forms of expression which will lead to broad understanding of culture and experience. The syllabi of this department have been designed in such a way that the graduates of the department can make them fit for professions like teaching, executive, theatre and performance, journalism, management and information technology. At Southern, students have free access to full-fledged computer lab with internet connection. They can also use English language lab. The University library has a rich collection of books and Journals on English language & literature. Sufficient number of highly qualified faculty members having required training in teaching English has been required for the department. Apart from the in house faculties, distinguished professors from different Public Universities teach here as adjunct faculty members. The interest of the faculty members in English encompasses a board spectrum of areas in English studies. At present, the Department of English offers Bachelors and Masters degree programs, which have been providing the students with an opportunity to learn and appreciate the literary works of sufficient nations so they can develop library and linguistic tastes of their own.
The goal of Southern University is to develop human resources through proper planning of different types of programs after an overall survey of the needs and requirements of the present day world.
Located in the heart of the port city Chattogram, the University has a growing library with a rich collection of books and journals. The methods of teaching are most modern and lessons easier for the learners. From its inception, the University has been attracting quite a large number of learners in different disciplines. Holding of discussions, seminars, symposium and other extra-curricular activities is a regular phenomenon in this University. Southern University in short, is an educational institution with difference and totally committee to the acquisition, transmission, creation and synthesization of knowledge.

The Bachelor of Arts in English (BA in English) degree is 4 years program, requires 120 semester hours of Post Secondary college-level study providing quality education at undergraduate levels. This requires Semester credit hours depending upon the academic background. Course work features practices, as which will enable students to work effectively in business and education environment.
